Stockton Medals

t13272Did everyone in Stockton get one of these medals?

The Silver coloured medal is a Railway Centenary (1825-1925) one and has ‘Presented by L. Ropner, Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, 1925’ engraved on it. The other has King George V and Queen Mary on one side and Councillor M. Robinson, JP Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Coronation, June 22nd 1911 on the other.  Any information about these medals would be much appreciated.

  1. Yes, I’ve got the silver Railway centenary medal, it was my Mams as she was from Stockton and she gave it to me as I’m interested in steam engines/railways. As a ”Yarm lad” you got a commemorative mug which I also have, given from my Dad.

  2. The silver medal was presented to every Stockton child in school on that day. My father-in-law Raymond Jennings, now deceased, often told the story of Oxbridge Lane School children being taken, by the classes, to stand beside the railway line as it curved toward Darlington. He described the scene as grand with the ladies in silks and the men in tails with top hats – but they all got some soot on them!

    • As I have said before on this Website I have in my possession a centenary medal for the Stockton to Darlington first passenger railway. But this one has the Queens mother and father on it when they where Duke and Duchess of York.
Any more information on this would be appreciated.

      • I too have what I think is the same medal, which I purchased several years ago on ebay, the front of the medal depicts 2 members of the Royal Household and is inscribed to commemorate the visit of the Duke and Duchess of York, on the other side it is inscribed with railway centenary 1825 -1925 and has what I think is “Stephensons Rocket” and possibly the same engine pulling carriages, it is of a gold colour, I too know very little about who it was presented to, I am looking for further information.
