The River Tees, Stockton

t12645I thought our friends on Picture Stockton would like to see this print of the town. I’m not sure of the date, but I’m sure somebody will be able to tell us.

  1. I’m so pleased to see this beautiful print. One of my ancestors captained ships from Stockton during the late 1820s until his death in 1843, and this wonderful image really brings this to life for me. Thank you!

  2. I bought this print in a shop in Yarm Lane in 1968. It can be dated to 1825-8 by the coach on the Stockton and Darlington Railway, which then ran along the Wharf, which is on the extreme left. Steam locos did not pull passengers at first: local coach proprietors were allowed to run their coaches for a toll, just like today’s railways! There was a spate of hand-tinting plates from books, such as this, in the 1960/70s.

  3. Just to the left of centre on this image is a tall building with what I presume to be a church spire, does anyone have any ideas what or where this is.

  4. On the right hand side of this picture is a horse race on the Carrs, an event which first took place in 1724. Racing moved to Mandale Marshes in 1855 but there had been no racing for a considerable length of time before that so this picture could be prior to 1800.

  5. I have a copy of that print bought in Chester in 1976 from a reputable print dealer and with a label on the back guaranteeing it to be more than 140 years old with a publication date of C1835. I’m pretty sure that it is hand tinted and the colours look very slightly different, although this may well be due to poor colour rendering on my screen. The prints would almost certainly have been cut out of a book of some sort… Librarians beware !!
