The Green Dragon Pub, Stockton

t7136 t7138The Green Dragon Yard, a courtyard of historic warehouses within a series of alleyways. Considered the cultural quarter of the town, it houses the Green Dragon Studios, the Georgian Theatre and the Green Dragon pub – is there a genuine smugglers tunnel in the cellar?

  1. The sweet factory was called “NEBO” I seem to remember. As a schoolboy in 1959 I was interested in some info that the building had been a tythe barn. I went into the factory and was shown around by the manager and it was fascinating to see the beams of what he confirmed had been a tythe barn. All gone.

  2. Yes, great pictures but the presence of gawdy advertising banners across historic walls, neon footway lights in the connecting lane and roller shutters covering premises facades entirety takes away from the potential character described. Where is the local planning authority in all of this?

  3. Durham Constabulary garaged the Stockton Division car in a garage in the centre of the yard. It was still there in 1959. Access to it was through the narrow archway from Finkle Street. At the same time the old theatre at the far end of the yard was a sugar confectionary factory.
