Hi Larry
I’ve just googled this and according to the Bridges of the Tyne website ‘The forty-three arches span 760 yards and include 7.5 million bricks and 139,000 cubic feet of stone.’
Steve
THIS IS IT!!! This is the spot that I and my family were when I was ???5- maybe 6yrs old.
We were staying with Dad’s Sister, my Aunt Mary Hughes, in Billingham on the ICI estate. We paid a visit 2 years back…so,so different now…..but we were, I think, sat on the other side of the bank and I saw a frieght run empty over the viaduct, counted the wagons as they rumbled along. I’ve had that shot in my head all those years.
Erm…..sorry,just an old geezer from down south, reminiscing…
…we could have been sat THE OTHER side of the viaduct and looking t’other way….too long ago…but I feel better for telling you all!
