Surely this picture is only “Lowreyesque” in that it is showing a Northern industrial town.? There are none of the stick figures, and virtual absence of normal and atmospheric perspectives that are a feature of this iconic, if slightly overated painter.
Barry’s painting suugests that here was someone with the ability to coordinate hand, eye and mind. So I definitely agree, however, that Stockton should be using the painting on its publicity
A superb piece of illustrative work, an undoubted talent. I’m surprised that S’ton BC have not used this particular work in any of their promotional, or publicity material, with a dedication to this local gentleman. It is sensitively reminiscent, in a Lowry-esque manner, of what might be termed the ‘Golden age’ of the town and it’s people.
Is it dated ’67 or ’87? I can’t quite make it out, even on full-zoom.
Thank you Chris for your kind comments, the date is 1987. We have a few of Barry’s creations around the walls of our home in Melbourne, there is one of Lealholme showing the Board public house. Barry was a man of many talents and I am glad to say that his talent is not wasted because it has been passed on to his Granddaughter.

Thank you for putting this picture on here. Uncle Barry was a very talented artist and his loss will be sorely felt. I haven’t seen this picture before, but have a wonderful oil painting of West Burtion Falls in Yorkshire painted by Barry hanging in my hall. Barry was a retired headmaster.
