I trust that the exhibition will be also featuring the construction and importance of the North Shore Branch of the Clarence Railway, set up in competition with the S&D Railway. Especially when it became clear that Stockton was going to be by-passed, in favour of building Port Darlington, soon to be renamed Middlesbrough.
The North Shore Branch was the foundation of industry in the Portrack, Tilery and Bath Lane areas of Stockton. Furthermore, Stockton’s first official station on the North Shore Branch, just east and south of where, the North Shore Branch crossed Norton Road, in Tilery.
The Stockton and Darlington Railway will be celebrating it’s Bi-Centenary in 2025 and plans are already being formulated on how to celebrate the event. It is doubtful whether it will be anything like the 150th in 1975 with the marvelous cavalcade of steam as no doubt ‘elf and safety will play it’s part in the 21st Century!
However, the Friends of the Stockton & Darlington Railway will be holding an event in a large marquee in Stockton High Street on Saturday 23rd September 2017 to celebrate the 192nd birthday of the S&DR. The actual anniversary date is the 27th, a Wednesday but a weekend event should ensure a good turn out for the celebrations. Hopefully! Look out for more details in the local press and SBC website, and Picture Stockton, closer to the date.
We can all experience the 1925 event by watching the great film on the BFI web site here:
