Trustee Savings Bank, Stockton c1973

t13507The Northumberland and Durham Trustee Savings Bank was the last remaining dwelling house in the High Street which stayed intact and unchanged at ground level up to 1978. The entrance to the old Chapel of Ease was here.

  1. Does anyone know anything about the shop that was in the corner behind the skip.
I think they sold cheese ?

  2. My sister opened an account for my 15th birthday I am now 65 and still have the account, it is now Lloyds TSB.

    • We believe a Chapel of Ease dedicated to St Thomas-a-Becket was built in this area between 1235-1237. The chapel provided the locals with an easier place to worship rather than travelling to St Mary’s church at Norton which was Stockton’s parish church until 1713.
