Not having seen the New High Street I seem to get the impression not many people are happy with the new lay out. Surely after all the disasters we have had in the planning of Stockton over the years we could finally get it right. I will see for myself in a few weeks time and I am looking forward to it. Some of the shops in the High Street are not really High Street shops, they look more like the back yard type of the thirties.I hope the flower display is on once again. as Stockton excels in this aspect of Town Planning. Also the Ropner Park improvements are World Class and the council should take a bow for their efforts in this area.
Note the cars parked on the High Street and how the parking is implemented. It does seem in my opinion (despite my reluctance to think cars a good idea) better done than the excuse for High Street parking they are now implementing…
The parking down the centre of the High Street became the place to be for those in the “boy racer” club. Not that there was any racing of course, although the road arrangement did make a natural circuit, just more of a place to hang out and add a bit of life to the place. It was sad to see it go, but it has to be said that reversing out directly onto the busy dual lanes of buses, cars and people which, were already trying to avoid each other, was never the best arrangement. As traffic levels increased it was inevitable that something had to change.
