I think the 2 storey parts of the M&D club were once part of a dual bay fronted private residence called West End House, which pre-dates the other large houses nearby (Cromer Lodge, Beverly House & Woodlands). It had a large garden which fronted onto Yarm Lane with the main entrance between two gate lodges. I’ve seen West End house on several maps starting 1857 when it was surrounded by fields. Over time the gardens gradually shrink with the building of the surrounding streets of terraced streets (now gone) and commercial properties along Yarm Lane. I think the M&D club was finally demolished in 2010/2011.
Sue, I went to Mill Lane School with Keith Ferguson, presumably your brother, before he went on to Grangefield after the 11+ exam. Am I correct in saying that you had another brother called Ian? I lived in Tarring Street at that time and visited your house at 33 Buchanan Street many times, and also remember that your Dad was a joiner/carpenter.
I was always fascinated by what went on in the wooden Toc H building, which resembled a large garden shed, located next to the shop and opposite the M&D club.
Was the Barrington club before M & D. also remember Toc H. building, entertained O.A.Ps. with other 15 year olds late 40s in there.

This was once Westend House and was the subject of a “Desk-Based Assessment and Historic Building Analysis” report before demolition.
