Harkers Engineering c1980s

t13622t13621The names I know are… Jack Morris, ??, Ian Stirman, John Taylor, Barry Roberts, Steve Passmore, Mr Fred Harker, Norman Bellerby, Brian Craven (manager of the Nat West Bank in he High Street),
Mike Round, Len Turner, Malcolm Harker, ??, Peter Cowe, Stan Wareing, Brian Townsend and Paddy Meehan.

Len is holding a cup which says ‘The Ruth Harker Memorial’ on it. I think this was originally awarded for the annual Harkers Lyke Wake Walk or possibly the sponsored bike ride to Wales and back…

  1. I came across this photo quite unexpectedly when I was looking for links to Grangefield Grammar School which is sadly to be demolished soon. Imagine my surprise to click on this website to then see my Dad, Stan Wareing smiling out of the photo at me!! I have very fond memories of Harker’s annual cricket matches and work’s trips back in the day. And Mam and Dad getting ready for the annual Christmas ‘do’ at the Queen’s Hotel was something else! Dad has been gone 10 years now but worked at Harker’s most of his working life until his retirement. He would have been tickled pink to know this photo was on th’internet!

  2. This is for the Lyke Wake Walk and the guy 5th from the right is the late John Calvert of Head Wrightsons, Thornaby, who showed them the way over the moors.

      • So what was the cup actually for Michael? The lads from Head Wrightsons, Thornaby, John Calvert, Billy Sharp, Barry Roberts, Dave Pitt, Eddie Burridge & others used to do the Lyke Wake Walk often.

      • I got in touch with Malcolm Harker in order to get the name of the chap presenting or receiving what looks like a cheque to, or from, his father Fred. He gave me that name (Brian Craven) but he wasn’t a hundred per cent sure if it was for the Lyke Wake Walk or the possible sponsored bike ride Len Turner completed to Wales and back. He said he had good memories of doing the walk himself with Giddings and Lewis making him a large sponsorship donation amount as they were hoping to sell him a new machine. He was grateful to his dog at that time helping him in the last five miles. My dad Norman gave me the name of the chap in the mustard coloured top as Barry Roberts so sorry if that’s not him.

      • You have the late Barry (Badger) Roberts rightly named, Michael he is the one with the brown tee-shirt near Fred Harker. The late John Calvert had nothing to do with any sponsored bike ride, he specialised in the Lyke Wake Walk, but unfortunately he passed away in his early forties to an industrial ailment.
