With a bit more imagination a completely new line might have been built running Eaglescliffe- Stockton – Middlesbrough. It is a disgrace that Stockton does not have a direct line to London.
I think this may have been taken from a 35mm slide. I’m saying this because I have recently bought a converter to put my fathers 35mm slides onto my PC and I noticed when I looked at them on the PC some were the opposite way round, as in the pic above, the flour mill should be on the right of the picture.
Was there a flour mill on each side of the river at this location as the one in this photograph appears as though its on the Stockton side of the river.
The picture is taken from the Bowesfield side of the river, so doesn’t that put the mill in the correct place? Don’t forget the bend in the river beyond the railway bridge.
It’s a good optical illusion, the Clevo flour mill looks like it’s on the Stockton side of the Victoria bridge, just behind the building on the left. When in fact it is on the Thornaby side behind, and just down river of, the Bridge Hotel. This rail bridge is now redundant being replaced by a new bridge alongside it.
It’s the Bridge hotel that’s puzzling me? I had thought it was next door to the Clevo flour mill but that does not appear to be the case from this photograph – they appear to be well apart. I think my memory must be playing tricks on me.
The photo having been taken from the Bowesfield side of the river just south of the Tees Rail Bridge, just about where the A66 Surtees Bridge is today.

If you are interested in why this photo is correct & how it relates to the location and landmarks at the time… I got a carried away and made this…

This image shows the true locations of these landmarks (albeit from the opposite direction) :
