Wellington Terrace, Norton Road

t10700Situated on Wellington Terrace, Norton Road was a three storey building known as Wellington House – a Diocesan Training Home for servants c1900, it then became St. Mary’s Convent School shortly afterwards. When a new school building was built behind St. Mary’s Catholic Church (seen in the distance) in 1909, Wellington House then became St. Gerard’s Convent.

  1. Norton Road seems to of had quite a few Terraces in it’s time. Here’s a few I found on the 1895 town plans: Bevan, Hodgson, Providence, Crosby, Walter, Oxford, Albert, Wellington, Clarence, Victoria, North, Hardwick. I’m sure there are more. Some of the original terrace signs can still be seen. A fair few of the terraces have gone.

      • Jon, Old maps are available to view (& purchase) online at http://www.old-maps.co.uk/. I managed to stitch together a few screen shots of the 1:2500 maps (hence the poor quality if you zoom in). I then added the detail found from the town plans over the top. Glad you liked the result.

    • My Grandparents lived in Atterby Terrace, which ran from the Tower House corner of Durham Road, up to the bend, near newtown club.. their address was 4, Atterby Terrace, which became 17, Durham Road.
