  1. This photo is a portion of the panoramic view titled ‘The Square c.1960’s already on the site labelled s200, containing a detailed description of the buildings. The above photo was taken from the church tower.

  2. 4th car up, bottom left in photo appears to be a Ford Corsair, introduced in 1963, getting us a bit nearer the date of the photo

  3. Its just a guess but I suspect that the picture was taken from the top of the Council Offices/Library in Church Road. The first part of the offices was built in the late fifties and was hailed by the art teacher at Stockton Grammar as being top class design.

As for the picture itself this could have been taken around 1960. The stretch of the river belonging to the Malleable Works was starting to become quite disused.

It would be interesting to see a modern day comparison

  4. Can anyone confirm as to whether the white single storey building in the botton right of the picture was perhaps a council building, possibly a rent office.

    • Yes it was the housing department I used to work there, October 1959 you went through a corridor the the architects department on the other side

  5. I can recall seeing a building with the words “Mission to Seamen” on it, down Stockton docks. Can’t remember exactly where though. Perhaps someone may know.

      • Mervyn – The clue is the building directly behind the Mission which shows an Austin cars logo which was a motors showroom. I would say it would be half way between what is now the Police Station and the old Remploy building in the distance which would take the distance it was with the Police Station as previously mentioned. When in the 1st Norton Scouts we gave a concert to the residents in the Mission.
