People arrived in droves to get a glimpse of the Royal car as it proceeded along the High Street. The Royal Standard can be seen flying from the Town Hall, Stockton c1956.

I too remember the visit of Queen Elizabeth II to Stockton in 1956. I would have been nine years-old at the time and attending Billingham North Junior School on Pentland Avenue, Billingham. Our teachers organised us into columns of two-abreast and marched us up to Junction Road, Norton. We all squatted on the kerbside awaiting what appeared to be hours for the royal car and her Majesty to pass. Eventually the cry went up that “the Queen is coming!” We jumped to our feet with our Union Jack flags clutched in our hands. These we waived enthusiastically as the royal car drove slowly by, thus allowing us to catch a glimpse of our Queen. We then had the long walk back to school.

I remember lining Norton Road with crowds of people watching the motorcade passing.
