Steam on the St John’s Crossing branch

t13863Loco no 6 was the last shunter on this line working there from 1964 to 1966 but for a number of years before this, maybe 10 to 15, the shunting work was done by a loco called Kilmarnock.

Her name came from the fact she was built by Andrew Barclay Co. from Kilmarnock and the name just stuck. Being built in 1898 she was 66 years old when she was finally retired in 1964. The driver seen in the cab had the first name of Thomas.

  1. I didn’t see much of number 6 whilst it was working in Stockton. My main records of the locomotives used on the Quayside line show “Kilmarnock” in August 1964 and my pictures can be seen on this site at http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2012/08/08/quayside-locomotive-kilmarnock/. In September 1963, the line was being worked by a Sentinel vertical-boiler locomotive called “Gradwell” and photographs can be viewed at http://picturestocktonarchive.files.wordpress.com/2012/07/t12405.jpg?w=150&h=150. Also in 1963, the remains of another locomotive called “Swillington” were just outside the Tyne Tees Shipping locomotive shed – photographs are at http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2012/08/08/quayside-locomotive-swillington/.
