I have a similar picture which I will look for outside M & S around 1959. We must have been very trusting then as a photographer wandered around the High Street and would take your picture ask for your name and address and 2/6d I think, then the picture would arrive in the post. A far cry from the instant pictures of today.
Amazing how fashion goes round in circles! Apart from a few bits of detailing the slim cut of the jacket and trousers is very currently ‘a la mode’!
A popular look 1959-62. Italian-style suit with bum-freezer jacket. Points, white socks, shirt with cutaway collar and slim jim tie. The Beatles made this look old-fashioned overnight. The beard is out of place, not commonplace then…
And either a trilby or flat cap.
Mike, did your parents live in Hartburn ?.
No not Harburn folk maxspeed. Ma and pa lived in Newtown and now Whitehouse Farm.
We were smart in those days, collar and tie, single breasted suit, that was the norm then, no casual gear. Even going to the seaside you always had your mac over your shoulder.
Just noted the top pocket spikes usually attached to a card and the almost winkle pickers shoes !!!
