On looking on the 1899 map of Stockton the TV shop would have been on the junction of Albert Road and Wellington Street. To the left of the Co-op window you would have looked towards the High Street and that section of Wellington Street on the map was called St John’s Road, later becoming Wellington Street. It’s already been commented that Albert Road merged into Nelson Terrace and Prince Regent Street. In the opposite direction Albert Road did join Bishopton Lane not far from The Leeds Hotel.
Hi I thought it was the co-op! If I came from the High Street the Co-op would be on my left hand side so how does the Wellington Street sign come to be on a road on the opposite side of the road?
Margaret, look at the reply and link to the photo the Picture Stockton team provided and you will see that if you could see a little further to the left of this picture you would actually be looking towards the high street as opposed to from it, that why the Co-op is on the right hand side.
Margret, you’re not alone, I was a bit confused too. It makes sense when you realise that the Society House window in the background is on Albert Road, not Wellington Street. The photo here: http://picturestocktonarchive.files.wordpress.com/2013/02/t12801.jpg shows the same window, on the right hand side of the coffee show door.
In the days of the Howell shop photograph, that part of the Cooperative that appears in the photo, used to be the butchers, complete with sawdust on the floor!
Jonathan, where did Albert Rd start/finish, did it them become Nelson Terrace, then Prince Regent St. And what did it become in the other direction, John St?
Jon, Having another look at a map it’s debatable where Nelson Terrace stops and Albert Road starts, and it may of changed over time? On a 1951 map it seems that the property numbers on Nelson Terrace continue to the junction with Wellington Street. So it may very well be Nelson Terrace in this photo. Yes Albert Road becomes Nelson Terrace, then Prince Regent Street and in the other direction Albert Road stops at the junction with Mill Street West /John Street / South Street. John Street looks very narrow in comparison.
The road that is behind the van and between Howells and the Co-op (Society House) was Albert Road. Not far round the corner Albert Road would become Nelson Terrace. The part of Society house in view is shown in the first photo in the post highlighted by the PS team.

What is the building in the background? I can see the Wellington Street sign but cannot get my bearings.
Hi Margaret – the building in the background is the Co-op… http://picturestocktonarchive.wordpress.com/2013/02/19/society-house-wellington-street-1993/
