Head Wrightson Bridge & Bridgeplate

Photographs of the former Oxford Pipe Bridge to the long gone gas works that crosses the canal south of Oxford railway station. It is now a public footbridge. It was built by Head Wrightson, Thornaby-on-Tees, in 1927 as the bridgeplate still intact indicates.

  1. This is a bridge within a bridge, a relatively modern blue footbridge constructed within the framework of the older white pipe bridge. This bridge was built to carry pipes for the Oxford St. Ebbes gas works, a 19 acre site, that occupied both sides of the canal. The gas works closed c.1960. Sometimes referred to as Grandpont bridge, it links the 7.4 acre Grandpont nature reserve (part of the old gas works site) plus the modern Sir Geoffrey Arthur building of the university with Friars Walk of the St. Ebbes district and adjacent streets joining the A420 near the Oxford ice rink. The bridge is about one mile south of Oxford railway station.
