  1. A Better looking High Street in 1899 than the present pig in a poke as I have seen on the photographs published. In Australia we preserve as many old buildings as is possible, sometimes preserving the front part of the building and developing behind the the old front section if the building as a whole can not be saved. Just think what a wonderful High Street we would have if those who were allowed to destroy so much of Stockton’s history had been controlled. I think of the Johnnie Walker laboratory building as only one example, the Vane Arms and the whole of the buildings near to the Vane Arms. Many others to numerous to mention.

  2. Yes and its a disgrace that possibly the finest building in the high street was demolished. I am sure that if the building had been preserved it would still have been a great attraction to the high street.

  3. Why ever were the powers that be, ever allowed to knock it down, all it achieved was to make Stockton High Street, look just like any other British High Street…. Nothing to write home about these days.
