Tug of War Winners, Stockton Grammar School c1890

t14234The inscription on the shield reads ‘High School for Boys Stockton-on-Tees’. The school was on the junction of Norton Road and Garburtt Street, it was built in 1863 and closed in the 1960s.
Would this be the Stockton Grammar School as I remember Salmons the chemist near it.

  1. Some unusual and varied head covering. I was at the school 1950-57 when caps were the essential head covering. There were reprimands if you were seen going or leaving school not wearing the cap. How times have changed.

  2. I agree with Geordie as I attended SGS from 1960 to 1965 – moving from Garbutt Street in 1963 up to a new building in Fairfield Road which has since been demolished and replaced by the new Ian Ramsay Academy.

  3. That would be the self same school. I remember Stockton Grammar school at the junction with Garbutt Street and Norton Road. Along with Salmons Chemist on the opposite side
