Another local landmark succumbs to the developers and yet another block of student accommodation rises from a former public house. There is very little left of this part of ‘old’ Thornaby except for the former Methodist chapel on Sun Street yet at one time it was a hive of industrial activity and the home of the Thornaby Pottery Works. Taken Sunday 5 July 2015.

  1. It seems daft to mention it but this pub Royal George, Thornaby, 55 years ago served under age drinkers, it was there hangout. There was a room at the back were schoolboys and youths aged 15, 16 or 17 went in. Because of this use the expression “In the George”, or “Going down the George”, “or outside the George” ” were well used then Thornaby expressions. The other mysterious Thornaby pub was the always looked haunted Harewood Arms, Harewood Terrace with Stockton road, Thornaby, which locals called Brewery Bank which lead to the famous Wilderness, the Erimus and Stockton Racecourse.
