My gran lived in Cotswold in the last ICI house before the post war development. There was a grassed area opposite leading up to the footpath along the railway line. I don’t know how we got to know, but every so often the word would be spread “this Friday’s midnight exee is Mallard” or some other famous engine. We were then allowed to stay up and stand on the railings to see it pass. I’m not sure what for as it was pitch black and it was invariably impossible to make out anything other than the carriages.
