Various inhabitants of Stockton unsatisfied with the water supply have asked the Mayor, Charles Trotter to organise a meeting where this matter can be discussed.
The public meeting held on 14 July 1851 expressed disatisfaction with the “Stockton, Yarm and Middlesbrough Water Bill” currently passing through Parliament, and proposed that a new company be formed to supply the town with water.
Despite these objections, on 24 July 1851, the Stockton, Yarm and Middlesbrough Waterworks Bill completed its stages in Parliament and received Royal assent.
On 1 October 1851, work commenced on the new waterworks.
