Photographs showing the demolition of the old Roseworth Library on Redhill Road, Roseworth. The new library is now situated in Redhill Children’s Centre.

I loved Roseworth library and spent many happy hours reading and studying there it was my sanctuary from a a noisy family with 5 siblings of which I was the youngest. Happy days.
Loved it there in the mid sixties. I remember I asked to go up to the adults section because I’d been through the books I wanted to read. Arrived just before two every Saturday.
I recently drove through Roseworth and was shocked to see the Library has gone. I too spent happy time there in the early 60s before I moved to Newton Aycliffe in 64. Also gone are Redworth Juniors and Roseworth Seconday Modern, both of which I attended. I spent a happy early childhood in Roseworth.
Site now occupied by a Heron food outlet. When Roseworth Library first opened C1956 it had at times to operate a queue system for the children’s section until the novelty began to wear off a little. We would hover near to the counter looking for borrowers returning the ‘Famous Five’ books, all ready to ‘pounce’ for a loan.I seem to remember the first librarian at Roseworth as being a youngish man. Hardwick Estate built from the late 1950s and where I lived never managed to get a library of its own. Perhaps a sign of the changing times.
This breaks my heart! I lived in Hardwick. A large family with not a book in the house. I spent many happy hours in Roseworth Library. All my friends went to university… I am always proud to say “I was educated at Roseworth library”… So sad.

Is this going to be a grocers out-let?
Herons are supposed to be the ones.
