  1. My husband thinks they would have had Anhydrate in them. This is the basic compound to produce acids for the manufacture of nitrates.

    • Those were bulk powder hoppers before the torpedo shaped articulated ones which were unloaded from the bottom. They carried mainly Nylon Salts and other dry powders though Anhydrite would need to be warm as once it took in damp air it reverted to rock salt. ICI transport was a 24 hour seven day a week job with the drivers on shifts, they moved everything from Acids to dry powders. Train loads of produce also left ICI daily, it was a massive movement of products and nearly all in house.
