If my memory serves me correct. There was a sign above the bar relating to credit. Credit will only given to persons over 90, accompanied by their grandparents. Anyone confirm this. Mid 1950s
Meg, landlady of the Sun Inn, certainly stood no nonsense, but ran a great pub with the Bass ‘spot on’. Her son Terry took over for a while when she retired with Graham behind the bar. Had some great afternoons there. Meg’s calling time was “Anymore for anymore! “.
Coming on leave in the 50’s I and mates would go to Sloans for a few rounds of Billiards then over to the Grey Horse for a couple of pints before heading to the dance. The Landlord would sit behind the bar serving and if your face did not fit you did not get served. I often wondered how he made it pay as quite a few got turned away. A funny way to run a pub.
Info gained from the internet a gentleman by the name of Charles Stewart Stockdale was the proprietor of The Grey Horse Hotel – 1946 to 1975 when it closed down.
Spot on Dave, Charly Stockdale, as with a lot of landlords he seemed well travelled and had a fund of stories for his OK to drink crowd, certainly had an acid tongue.
Probably the last of the old style no nonesense men plus of course the odd woman. I was thinking of the Sun Inn, she took over when her husband died and a real tough nut.
Hi Ian, on a 1966/68 OS map that corner is shown as a single plot (without the angled corner that the Hotel had) and with a dashed outline (does that signify it was a vacant plot?). Previous maps that show the Grey Horse, show multiple properties taking up the same area. So you could be right.
I seem to remember that there was a date on the side of the new building when it was Pearl Assurance….always looked like a sixties/early 70’s block, I used to work next door to it.
There’s a picture elsewhere on this site of the Odeon and Pearl Assurance House taken from Castlegate in 1968 or thereabouts.

Was this the same man, or relative of, wrestler Gentleman Jim Stockdale?
Jim was his son. When I knew him he was a pipe fitter at Head Wrightsons, Thornaby.

I don’t remember this Hotel at all. When was it demolished.?

I think it was demolished long before 1975 – Pearl Assurance House was built in the mid to late 60’s on the site I believe

There’s also a picture when the site had been cleared:

So late sixties it is.
