Wow, how times have changed. Back in the 50s, breaking the hour for 25 miles was for the elite. Now we are seeing a 32.8 mph time trial (if I have my maths correct). I suppose the course was fairly flat as compared to the old Stokesley course we used to ride on Sunday mornings. First man off 7am if I remember correct. Often described as violent exercise in the middle of the night. I worked with one of the fast lads Reg Merritt from Thornaby wheelers. Trained with him a couple of times after work. He regularly broke the hour.
I can’t see many spectators or members of the public in those photographs ? The majority of the Stockton public were probably stuck in the horrendous traffic jams on the A19 and A66 as well as through Eaglescliffe and Yarm !
I’m all for supporting the town and the area but the traffic plan needs an urgent re-think .
Great to see our area hosting such an event.
