Joseph Street VE Day Celebrations c1945

t14988This is the celebration that took place in Joseph Street, Portrack on VE Day 1945. I understand the object hanging above the residents is an effigy of Adolf Hitler. Joseph Street is where my paternal grandparents lived but would not be in this picture, they both died in 1944.

  1. I only knew folk a few years later. However, the elderly lady front row, 3 from left , I am reasonably certain was Mrs. Petty. She used to “lay people out”. For those unfamiliar, that involved preparing for the undertaker who lived and had his parlour just past the ironworks.

  2. A good photo. My Mum and Nan are in it. My Mum would have been 10 years old at the time. Her name was Constance Wilson. Later Cox.

  3. My great great Aunt Eliza Adamson nee Bellerby lived at 34 Joseph Street in 1939 with my great great Uncle Thomas Adamson, unfortunately I can’t tell if any of my relatives are on this photo.

  4. Next to Mrs Taylor, Mrs Jordan, Mrs Spain and Mrs Morgan.

I was there but not on photograph, I lived in 22 Joseph Street.

  5. Grandmother Aggie Taylor front near centre and Mother Rose Leggett (nee Taylor) on the right in front of man with cap.

  6. Our Grandmother Aggie Taylor is in this photo just off centre on front and Mother Rose Leggett (nee Taylor) to right below man with cap. Wonderful photo.

    • Vera Raby was also my aunt. My mother, Martha Smith moved to London but we came back to visit Grandmother Coxon at least twice a year. She lived in the end house in Joseph Street, by the school. Auntie Vera and Uncle Tommy lived on the same side, a few houses along. My grans friend Mrs Thomas lived over the road.
