I just noticed the various faces above each window in this photo, wonder what they were about?
Although the building frontage has been reorganised & rendered, the faces are still there, and have been added to as there are now 7 of them, but only 5 in this photo.
If this is the corner I’m thinking of, the shop used to be called Gallons and my dad was born in the flat above in February 1931. No idea if it was Gallons in 1931 but as a child in the 1950’s I seem to remember that name.
Worked for Tommy on a Saturday when I was a kid in the 60’s at the other shop on the corner of Bone St. Most of the day was spent upstairs in the dusty department weighing out potatoes from a 4 stone sack into smaller bags. Mucky work, but worth it when you got paid. Can’t remember how much it was but it was well worth the effort. Happy days
