  1. Not sure but think Miss Potts is 4th from the left in the front row, not fifth. She was my neighbour in Norton. A lovely woman. I believe that her sister Bette was also a teacher in Norton, and that their father was a builder who built houses in the Norton area. Can anyone enlighten me?

    • I was at the school in the late 50’s to early 60’s and Miss Potts lived in Durham City at that time so was surprised to read she lived in Norton.

    • Miss Potts is right in the center of that group. I was at the William Newton School For Girls 1953-54. I was very happy there. One person NOT in the photograph is Mrs Lee who taught maths, not a good subject for me.

  2. Thank you for this photo, it brought back lots of memories for me, of my time at William Newton.

  3. I attended William Newton between 1961 and 1965 and remember Miss Potts, Miss Thompson and the lovely Miss Spencer (English and History). As I’ve said many times, these wonderful teachers did not deserve the troublesome pupil I was. However, I eventually did ok becoming a social worker in later life. I’m sure they would be surprised to know this as I think they thought I was a lost cause!
