I can’t quite get my bearings right with this old photo. Was the Metropole on Bridge Road opposite the old picture house, as Brunswick Street is also mentioned.
The Met was on the opposite side of the road to the Empire Theatre looking towards the High Street. Brunswick Street is in a different area of Stockton.
The headlines on the Mirror poster (lower right) refers to Mr Balfour attacking the Budget.
This dates the photograph to Spring 1909 when Balfour (Conservative) was leader of the opposition in Parliament, and attacked the Budget being proposed by the Prime Minister Lloyd George.

The building directly behind the Metropole Hotel in this photo is now the Thomas Sheraton pub, it was previously the law courts.
