Each to their own, but where’s the aspiration in “normal”? I would have your statement the other way round. The new lights, while bold in design, are also of a much simpler form so don’t clutter the view of the High Street itself.
Looking back (2009: https://goo.gl/maps/LdHPkAfyhu82 ) you’d be surprised how cluttered the High St. looked with all those overly fussy, twee, typical 90s-esque lampposts. They could appear in any County Durham town redevelopment that lacked imagination & aspiration. Vive la difference!
At least the street lamps look normal as opposed to the monstrosities in the high street, a very nice winter photo.
