Here is a photograph of my father John Edward Longstaff from Thorpe Street, Stockton at the age of 15. It was taken two weeks before he joined the 1934 hunger march to London.
Photograph and details courtesy of Duncan Longstaff.
I believe that the image above has been taken from the 1899 Ordnance Survey map of Stockton. We have a copy of it here in the Reference Library and this may be where we got the image from. It has however become worn and is not as clear as it is shown here. It would be worth looking at the National Library of Scotland website which has several historical maps for the Stockton area including the 1899 OS map.
Alternatively it could have been taken from the Godfrey edition of this map which we have available to view and/or purchase in the Reference Library (£3.50 each).
My mother used to talk about your Dad
She lived in Ann Street. I remember my nana talking about him too. Their name was Cox, quite a well known family in the area
I went to see The Young’uns in Toronto in October, they did a terrific show and sang some of their Johnny Longstaff songs. They are definitely worth going to see.
I went to see the “Young ‘uns” show about your father’s life at the ARC earlier this year – he was a remarkable man but very humble it appeared. I would recommend going to see it at Middlesbrough Town Hall on 8 Feb 2019 “The Ballad of Johnny Longstaff”
You mention the 1934 hunger march. Is this a different one from the Jarrow march of 1936?
Dave.
Hi, I would love a high resolution copy of the map imagine above. Would you be able to let me know where you got it from?
Many thanks
