I can recall when the Ketton Ox, intended to change its name to The Ox, but following objections from Townsfolk, backed by the Parish council the pub’s name was be retained. This famous pub was originally a coaching inn named the Ketton Ox, after the famous Durham Ox of 1802 fame, bred by Charles Colling of Ketton near Newton Aycliffe, Darlington. This giant bull ‘The Ketton Ox’ weighed 34cwt and 11ft around the girth and was exhibited at local fairs and shows. This pub is one of six grade 2 listed buildings within the Yarm conservation area.
