Trains passing Alliance Street & Templar Street c.1978 – These photographs were taken on a Sunday when main line trains were diverted past Stockton to allow engineering work to be carried out between Northallerton and Newcastle. The Deltic is 55022 Royal Scots Grey.

Somewhere, I have a tape-recording of an ‘A4’ Pacific (a “diversion” off the ECML would have been in force that day) made leaving Stockton station, heading southbound one Sunday on a VERY murky November afternoon in 1965… My tape was made just across the road from the southbound platform – at the same level. The “chime” whistles (likely from 60004) sound fan-tas-tic, with even a bit of doppler…

  2. Spring Street bridge in the background of the middle two photos. I used to train spot from there because it was at the end of my road (Sydenham).
