These photographs show a pair of Class 37 locomotives crossing Hartburn junction with a northbound iron ore train and a Class 40 locomotive approaching the junction in the opposite direction on it’s way to Thornaby depot. Both photo’s show the outline of Head Wrightson’s steelworks beyond Hartburn Lane bridge, the site is now a housing estate.

Soooo familiar. In my (very!) “misguided youth” (1967-71) I worked for British Rail in the Area Engineer’s office on the Middlesbrough end of Thornaby station. (THANK GOD that in late 1971 I obtained promotion to the corresponding office at Colchester – where I ultimately decided to remain, and where I reside still. To think of the 90/100 MPH track in Anglia I surveyed and set out (all without requiring independent checking until several years later) and without any sort of problem… That of an Area Senior Technical Officer was a fabulous role…) My school classmate (cycling champion Eric Short… Q. where are you now, buddy???) lived close to Hartburn Junction in Cranbourne Terrace where his lovely mum ran a hairdressing business. Oh Happy Day…
Hi Colin, Eric Short came to visit me couple of years ago. It was a surprise visit taking in a walk to Staithes from Port Mulgrave along the Cleveland Way and back alongthe shoreline. Email Picture Stockton who can provide you with my email address for you to get in touch or they can pass your email on to me and I will give you all the details. I am also in touch with John Cameron and his brothers. I think the last time I met you was in a pub near the BRBHQ at Maylebone.
Both photos taken from Spring Street footbridge.
