Stockton Tech was used for night classes as I taught there in the evenings. The North Eastern Secretarial Services building (NESS house) was where I used to take the Minutes of meetings to be typed and duplicated (as our small office did not have a duplicator in the 1970s!) when I worked at estate and land agents Thos Selby and Son offices above what was the Midland Bank next to the Post Office which was and is no longer standing. Midland Bank is now a pub; of course it is.
My late “pop” was – I believe – born in this road in 1920. He hailed from an extremely poor family who latterly lived very close to the railway line just north of Eaglescliffe (the station near Stockton/Thornaby) in Elmwood Road. They had two dogs whose names were ‘Gyp’ and ‘Spot’. ‘Gyp’ had to be put in the backyard whenever I visited, although ‘Spot’ was a gentle dog and would lay close to me in front of the fire. In the late 1950s a ‘B1’ Class (possibly No. 61034 ‘Chiru’) once derailed here and several months passed before she was removed.
Was born in at number 1 Nelson Terrace. Remember these shops and business very well. Father ran a corner shop and diary. Can’t make out the name of corner street in the photo but believe it could be Sydney or Finkle Street ?
Seem to remember shops such as Smiths Knitting, Kelsey and Blackburn watches/jewellery, Robertsons wet fish and of course next door to us …the Hippodrome. Happy days

The building on the corner was called Ness House it was owned by my aunt’s husband who was called Richard Wharldal.
I love these old photo’s, if anyone has one of Mandale Road with the old pubs or one with five lamps?
We are looking at the corner of Sydney St. And Nelson Terrace. The building on the corner is No.2 Sydney St. and then 11-14 Nelson Terrace. Demolished to build the new route of Nelson Terrace. The c1995 photo does the same place, just from the opposite direction.
Original Stockton Tech building was in Nelson Terrace, before the Oxbridge Avenue campus was built. I think it was still used for night classes after that.
