  1. A 1914 Trade directory shows:
    Curry Arthur, butcher,
    – 118 High Street (1912-22) (2nd property north of Blue Posts Yard)
(relocated to #115 (1924-59), which is to the north of Ship Inn Yard)
    – 19 Bridge Road (now the northern end of LiDL)
    – 82 Yarm Lane (near Hartington Road)

I can’t make it fit with the High Street, or Yarm Lane :(, so it may be Bridge Road or somewhere else? as they seem to have had multiple branches.

This photo is published in “Stockton-on-Tees, A pictorial History” (by Robert Woodhouse) where it is noted as 115 High Street. But “A Curry & Son” can be seen at 115 on a PS post titled “Stockton High Street c1940”, and it’s not a match for this photo (and I doubt it was rebuilt while they occupied it).

  2. MMmmm….I think I’d opt for a Yarm Lane location too, as the shop seems too narrow for the standard ‘burgh’ width of properties on the High St which was usually about 16’0″. While the brickwork and bay-window could be late 19thC. in appearance, the shopfront definitely appears to be Edwardian. Is the photograph itself marked as being in the High St?

  3. Hello Bob: That is where I worked. And, the pork pies were delicious. We were not allowed to have any, BUT, because I was a little , very poor kid then, one of the ladies slipped me one, and I scooted to the outdoor toilet to happily gulp it down.!!! Fond memories of the shop. All these pics and comments make me feel as if I am from another planet!!!! Strange!!But thanks for the memories.

  4. Dr. Bill Davies. There was a Curry”s Butchers on Stockton High Street. It was approximately near the Town Hall between Ramsgate and Dovecote Street. I know this because my Uncle who had a Butchers Shop in Norton High Street did send me on the bike to collect pork pies that they made for his shop.

  5. John: there must be another Curry”s on High St, because I worked there as a little kid doing deliveries. Around 1946.

  6. This picture of A.Curry’s butchers shop is on Yarm Lane, up from Hartington Road corner, not Stockton High Street.
