  1. I attended Hardwick Infants and recall Miss Carson, Mrs Milnes, Miss Sharp of who I still write too. Mrs Jowett also my girl guide leader, Mrs Titley with her magic reading reward box. Miss Hart the school nurse. My friends at the time were Christine Pearson and Peter Knott; I remember that Christine’s mum was a dinner lady and always gave us polos..

  2. Mr Homeland “Take off your shoes and stockings” All replied at the swimming baths: “We don’t wear stockings we wear socks!” Happy days.

  3. Definitely the juniors, I started when it first opened which I thought was in 1960 as I left Portrack in 1959 to go to Hardwick. I lived in Dryburn Rd opposite the infants. While I was there I played in goal for the football team. We were always in Flecks wood, nesting or geting up to no good. I do have a claim to fame, while I was at the juniors I came first in a national art competition. Happy memories…

  4. I attended this school from the infants to the juniors as did my brother & sister and our children. I met a few life long friends who I still see today. I have now lived opposite the school for over 20 years, it was heart wrenching to watch it being demolished, so many fond memories.

  5. I went to Hardwick junior and infants in the 70s then went onto Bishopsgarth. Acually having a reunion in the Thomas Sheraton in Stockton on the 23rd of July – all welcome.

  6. The huts did burn down in the late 70’s, if I’m correct one of the huts were Mr Kaylor’s class, he was a lovely teacher. I remember we all had to do our lessons in the hall.

    • Yes I do remember the huts being burnt down I was in Miss Heseltons Class I still see her at the WI North Tees and have since found out who set fire to those huts all those years ago but my lips are sealed x lol Angela Parry/was Keane

  7. My mother worked at the school for a long time as assistant cook to the cook Joan Sparks/McMann. She loved all the kids she served.

    • I remember your mother, she was a fabulous lady, used to keep an eye on me, she used to live next to the roundabout by the school.

  8. My Mother was a dinner lady at Hardwick School for many years, known to many as Nanny Wright, she lived on Piper Knowle Road. Good to see you on this site Jason, I am Dorothy, cousin to your dad Keith, nanny Wright being your Great Aunt Dolly.

  9. Yes this is indeed Hardwick juniours. The Huts didn’t burn down in the early 70’s though, it was getting on for late 70’s possibly even early 80’s. One of the huts was actually my class With Mrs Hesilton(sp). We had to do a big clean up operation the next day (the days before health and safety kicked in) and I remember standing on a nail poking through a charred peice of wood.

    • Eeeeh Jay I remember it like it was yesterday and still remember seeing the big hole in the floor and the smell of charred wood. We had to go in and get our work remember? I still see Miss Heselton from time to time she hasn’t changed at all.

  10. Memories indeed. I recall attending the Junior school after it was first built until after taking the 11-Plus in 1964. At that point I left England to live in Singapore for two years with my parents (dad was in the Royal Navy). We were livingt at 14 Waskerley Close at the time and I was an alter boy at the English Martyrs R/C church. Also attended Cubs in the old wooden hut adjacent to the church (visible in some of the other photos on the site). Don’t remember the old priests name but do remember he was Irish. Not too good on names after all this time but I seem to remember Peter Connor (took my dog Prince when we went abroad) and Billy Walker.

  11. Haven”t people got amazing memories? I went to the infants and juniors leaving in 76/77 to go to Newham Grange, Richard (Raggy) Hind and then onto the brand new (carpets and all) Bishopsgarth. I do remember Mrs Carson, Mr Mallinson and Mrs Buxton who was one of the dinner ladies. But thats about it..Has anyone got anymore pics of the school and kids over the years.

  12. Its hard to belive that this school is only 47 years old and its getting knocked down next year for houses. I remember goin to this school and my first teacher was Mrs Rrobinson and I think she was one of the best teachers there. I also remember Mrs Jewett, Mr Blackman, Mrs Sefton, Mrs Oridge, Mrs Greenwell(never sniff in her class)!! I dont think the teaching is as good today as it used to be either.

    • I was in fear of Mrs Jewett she poked me in the back once for miming to the songs in assembly American tan tights she wore and Mrs Orridge was very musical if i remember Mr Blackman lived on Darlington Back Lane Mr and Mrs Robinson are still teaching I believe fab teachers

      • Mrs Jewett was a bit mean. I remember her shaking me one day because I had got into a scrape at playtime with another girl. I never liked her after that. I remember Mrs Petler, Miss McLean (Mrs Orridge), Mr Blackman and Mr Davies who were all lovely. Oh and Mrs Chisholm – she was one of the burned hut teachers.

  13. I went to this school in the 70″s leaving in 1977 to go to Bishopsgarth. I remember the teachers Mrs Hezelton(great big glasses with blue rims) Mr Homeland (a canadian who used to ride to school on a Honda Moped), Mr Price (a lot of the kids were crying when we had his leaving assembly, he was a good teacher) Miss Garbutt (later to become Mrs Robinson after marrying Mr robinson, and I think she is now at Blakeston school) Mr Robinson (later to become Head Master)Mr Mallinson was the Head teacher at the time I was there( can anyone remember his appearance on the Generation Game with Bruce Forsyth?) Infant school teachers I remember are Miss Titley..and head teacher Mrs Carson

    • That’s right I remember all of those Mr Holmlund is my Brother-In-Laws Father. Small world Gary

    • David Williams here. I can remember him on that show. Had great memories of the schools there. I was in the dancing class. And I was a milk not too. Lol. Good days.

  14. Two Schools – Only seems like yesterday that the two schools on Rudyard Ave were put up and now they are coming down, Roseworth Infants on one side of the field, with Roseworth Junior School being at the other side, the most luscious huge patch of green grass in between. So get out your cameras folks, it won’t be long now. Like St Peter and Paul, new school (St Gregory’s) up, kids settled in then down with the old. Does any one know if Redbrook School comes in to this any way down the line, if so it may be a good idea to get down there with the camera. The Sacred Heart sight in Hardwick has seen building started over the past few weeks with the building of the replacement Hardwick Infants and Juniors, so get your cameras out on Hardwick folks. I have just got my self a new digital camera, with ten mega this and three x zoom etc, hope the old schools are still there by the time I have learnt how to use it. Roy.

  15. my dad went to bailey street school but he was originally from portrack his name is geoff mccarthy does anyone know of him?

  16. As a teacher at the school for some 16 years I can reassure your caption writer that the school has not been demolished but is going to be. It is now scheduled to be so by 2009. Development sometimes takes longer than you think!

  17. I attended here, joining “Junior 1” from Bailey Street School in about 1961. The Headmaster was Mr Price, my first class teacher was Mrs Wright – I think she had a fetish about teeth cleaning; my teacher in Junior 2 was Miss Denton. She was a holy terror, one of the really old school (and she seemed really old), she taught my mum at Tilery School in the 1930″s. I believe she was a volunteer hospital visitor at North Tees Hospital and lived to a great age. In 1963 to my great relief, I was transferred to Harrowgate Junior School at the other end of the estate. In my opinion, a much better school with more sympathetic younger teachers.

  18. I went to Hardwick Infants and then moved up to this school in the late 70″s. I left to go to Bishopsgarth in 1980. Mr Mallinson was the head teacher when I started there.

  19. This may be Hardwick junior school now but in the beginning the infants was at the left side and the juniors right hand side, I konw I went to them both then to Grangefield grammer in 1966.

  20. yes this is hardwick junior – i started there in 1961 when we moved to hardwick – i can remember mr price, mr shephard, miss irvine, miss wright – what a pity they are knocking this down what is happening to our memories?

  21. I used to attend class with Miss Forshaw, (I think) in the wooden hut which is located to the very right in the background. I also remember the wooden huts on the left hand. which were burned down in the early 70″s.

  22. I agree with Jeff Cooke, it is definitely Hardwick Junior School. I lived next door to Jeff on Waldridge Road, and started at the school the first day it opened, as he did. Previously I attended Mill Lane School in Dovecote Street.

  23. This picture is of the junior school I attended as a child and my son is the second generation to go to the school.

  24. Hardwick school the woodland in the background was part of Hardwick Hall, plantation. A late victorian country house, with crouquet-lawn and tennis court stood on this site, owned by a Mr M Robinson. In 1930 it was purchased by I.C.I and became the residence of Mr Zealley one of I.C.I Billingham first directors, hosting many important visitors including The Prince of Wales (Edward VII)and Prime Minister, Ramsay McDonald. During Second  War it became an I.C.I “Out Station”, for administration. Post war it was a senior manager training-school until 1970 when it became a labour and workers training school it had full kitchen and dining-room facilities right up to its close in the 1980s, when it was sold to developers who promised “The character of this fine building will be retained”. It was then left empty and the vandals moved in burning and destroying to such an extent that sections of the plantation were destroyed. “Oh dear”  said the developers “We”ll have to pull it down and put housing up instead”.

  25. I started this school when it opened coming from Bailey Street school. This is Hardwick juniors and the clue is the huts behind the school, and the woods (which are still there). You have to enlarge the pic to see. How ironic that the school is getting demolished next year as part of the Hardwick regeneration scheme. A road is going through from Harrogate Lane near to the woods to the roundabout on Piper Knowle Road. I have been taking thousands of photo”s recording this outrage for the future. the school is getting rebuilt on the old English Martyrs site. jeff cooke

  26. This is definitely a view of what is now Hardwick Junior School looking across the playing field from Piper Knowle Road.

  27. Many years ago I started school in Roseworth Estate.  The name of this school is Roseworth County Infants School on Rudyard Avenue, Roseworth.
