  1. Hi Peter Chisolm, I was in your Ian’s class at the Bedes my brother is Kev Church.
We still live in Stockton even though we have worked away quite a lot. I was a good friend of Osher Williams we played Sunday League together before he went to the Boro then Man Utd. Jimmy Mason was his next door neighbour in Tilery. I was talking to a Lady last year who is one of the Gilhoolies she is now a Smith. Danny Smith is her son.

    • Hello Peter & Ian not sure if you will remember me I also went to St Mary’s and then onto Our Lady & St Bedes, my name is Kay Marsay I lived in Portrack I came across this site, how lovely to see all the familiar names of the Teachers and Pupils, I have been trying to find a photograph of the pupils from 1964 up to 1968 has anyone any idea where I might find one? I was best friends with Paula Garside & Lorraine Patterson, there was also Oshor & Peter & Paul Muldowney? and a lad called Kieron, I would love to hear from anyone who remembers me.

  2. Rosemary (nee Tunley) August 2015

This bring back so many memories, some good and some very sad. I was one of six in our family, Janice, Peter, Rosemary (that’s me) , Phillip, Jacqueline and Christine.
Mam was called Mary and my dad was called John. We lived at a house in Trent street, my older brother and youngest sister still live there.

I remember your family Peter Chisholm, your sister Joshephine is about the same age as me, we were in the same class at school.
Do you recall a nun by the name of Siser Mary, that woman could put the fear of God into a saint. Haha. Those were the days hey.
God bless you and your family, and keep you safe.
    Rose.

  3. I was an infant and junior here from ’65 miss Johnston was my first teacher and in order they went, Miss McDermott, Miss Reid, there was another male teacher I can’t remember, then Mr Redmund I think (who taught basket weaving), then Mirs Elder who’s class I skipped as I did two years in Mrs English class. Mr English was the headmaster and those teachers were all in their own way fantastic, including being taken out for science class for a few of us by Mr English which I loved. Father O’Callaghan often popped in, as did Father Horan for religious chats. When Father Horan was made Parish priest in Hartlepool Father O’Keefe took his place. I actually presented Mr Redmund with his leaving gift when he retired at a school assembly, unfortunately I was in such tears I may have ruined the moment!

    • Wow, just reading this brings back memories for me too. I started St. Mary’s Primary in Sept. 1967, and left July 1974. I remember all these teachers; do you also remember Mrs. Carruthers (maiden name Miss Ross)?
I’d love to know who you are….

  4. I was at St Mary’s in the early 60s too. I remember Sister Agnes and also having the courtsey to the nuns if you came across them in the hall or anywhere. Also remember being bussed to Portrack for our dinner. We lived in Napier Street. Does anyone remember the tableau in the class cases around the hall? Gosh how the memories have come flooding back.

  5. Oshor and Peter Williams live in Manchester and have done for some years now. Kevin’s still in Stockton and can be found in the Station pub (that’s if it’s still there). I’m in London but do try to get back home as often as possible.

I really must check this site more often as it brings back a lot of memories from when we were kids.

  6. May I correct the title above, describing the Vicarage St Mary’s, and suggest that it is amended to the Presbytery of St Mary’s church. The title of Vicarage only concerns the Anglican churches and Presbytery is for the Roman Catholic churches.

  7. I went to St Mary”s and was in the same class as Oshor, Brian Wilson & Iain Chisolm. If you Google “Oshor Williams” there”s a full page on his football career etc!

  8. I remember the Williams family. Oshor, a very good footballer, moved from Boro to Man U. Kevin was a good friend and so was Marian. I dont know were they live now, I believe Kevin is in Hardwick, but as for Oshor and Marian I dont know. I think Oshor as still got something to do with football.

  9. I have a wedding certificate of my Grandfather and mothers wedding at the chapel in January, 1892. He was 20 and she 19 when they got married. I am trying to find out if he was buried in the graveyard or his dad, Thomas Brett. My Grandma and Pa were called James Brett and Martha Ann Burr.

  10. To Bob Irwin…yes, Oshor Williams the ex pro footballer lived in Tilery. We lived in the house next door to the pub. Can”t recall the name so hope someone can help there.

  11. my mam attended st marys school in the 60″s she was known as norma castelow “she lived in trent street at the time..does anyone remember her

  12. Hi Brian & Peter, I remember Osher and the birthday party, just! As stated, memories do fade. It would have been November 1967. I recall Mr and Mrs English though my first memories of the school are being terrified as my elder siblings took me there from the first day. As the route went under the railway bridge, then being told, at such an age, that if you went under the bridge when the train came it would fall upon you then meeting the nuns for the first time! I ended up with one of my sister”s in her class on the teacher”s knee being read a story till I calmed down. Bean bags in the playground, scuffed knees when you fell down, wellies in winter, plastic sandals in summer, knitted wooly vests.

  13. Brian, you are right! We lived at 244 Norton Rd which is on the corner of Larkhall Sq and across from The Brown Jug. You would have come to my brother Iain”s birthday party (he is about 5 years younger than me) – because our family was so big our Mam and Dad let us have one party each when we were 10 years old! I left St Mary”s to go to Ushaw College in 1964 then to St Bede”s in 1965. I would guess that Osher Williams was one of the Williams family that lived in Tilery? Iain looks at this site from time to time so no doubt will add a comment or two.

  14. Peter, I was at St. Mary”s from around 62 to 69. Did you live on the corner of Norton Road/ Larkhall near the Brown Jug? My memory is not as bright as it was but I do remember going there for a birthday party (Ian?). I think I went with Osher Williams.

  15. Brian, you must have been at the school the same time as me. I remember all the same teachers and I too was an altar boy at the church. When I started school the playground at the top of the school was used when the St Mary”s senior girls were still at this building (head teacher for them was Sister Mary). They used the classrooms above the Infants and that was their playground. They must have left in the early 60s to the new school out at Fairfield and then some of the Junior classes took over those classrooms but of course there was no way we were going to be allowed to use the roof!

  16. I used to go to St. Mary”s school in the 1960″s. I remember Father O”Callaghan well – I was an alter boy in the Church. Sister Agnes was our Head Teacher when I first started school, then it was Mr. English. Other teachers I remember were Mrs Johnson, Mrs Elder and Mr Redman (canework classes)I also recall that huge cross in the smaller playground. The other playground was further along (no longer). There was also a playground at the top of the school but was rarely used. I also remember being bussed to Portrack for our dinners.

  17. My mother Lillian (nee Hoey) and her four sisters all attended St. Mary”s church and school around the 1920″s when the head teacher was Sister Damian. At that time the fenced roof of the building in the second photograph was the girls playground.

  18. I was very interested to see the vicarage of St. Mary”s church. I used to go to the school behind the vicarage and I also used to play the organ when I was a young girl, when Father O”Callaghan was the parish priest.
