  1. On Thursday evening a Steidl-Reisen tour coach parked up on the Stockton station approach road. After a short while a group of elderly tourists left the coach, I assume they would be of German nationality. The group then proceeded to the station platforms and footbridge taking many photographs. Not sure what would bring such a tour party to this now shell of a station, it’s former glory days long since gone. Living close to Stockton station it is the first time I have ever witnessed tourists visit the place.

  2. I have lived in the railway building since 2009. I look out onto the railway, just before the end of the building itself. I enjoy watching the trains going past, I only wish that the GRAND CENTRAL stopped here. It’s a lovely place to live. My flat is on the ground floor and I leave a light on in the window sometimes, why?? – I dont know, maybe because I feel it sends out a comforting feeling to those drivers, staff, and of course the passengers.

  3. T. Capindale:I believe the overall roof at Stockton station was removed in 1978, late in that year if my memory of it is correct. Cost of refurbishment and repairs was given as the reason for its removal. By this time the number of long distance services which used the station had greatly declined, though one or two still remained and Stockton”s importance as a rail centre had been much reduced. In around 1985 the station became unstaffed and the results were only too predictable, not only in its appearance, but also in promoting the ludicrous situation where people – and who can blame them – were afraid to use the place with its dark subway, vandalism and general air of dereliction. Fortunately there has been considerable improvement since then and it”s great to see the original buildings sympathetically utilised for another purpose. In autumn, 2007 Grand Central Trains hope, after some delays, to begin direct daily services to King”s Cross from Sunderland and Teesside, the first for many years, but these trains will call at Eaglescliffe for Teesside passengers.
