I lived in Hutchinson Street which was like an extention to Dixon Street. When the chimney in the picture was blasting out a pall of black smoke the housewives of the area would have to rush out and take in their washing from the back street lines and rewash it all. After a few months of this my mother became more cunning and waited until there was a wind change before drying. – – – Tumble dryers? What are those!!
