  1. Yes the 700 year anniversary was celebrated and all the stall holders were in period costume. I have a friend who has a stall on the market and they had no rent to pay if they dressed up for the day.

  2. It looks as if we have to thank Bec, the Bishop of Durham for our Wednesday market. He authorised the weekly event by signing a charter back in 1310. I do not live locally, so can anybody tell me how, or if Stockton celebrated the 700th anniversary last year in 2010?

  3. This could be the Victoria Ground, Brian, the stand on the left would be the one that was burnt down by some kids in the early fifties or late forties. I learned only recently from a friend who admitted he was one of the culprits, the photo would be looking towards the Dressing Rooms, which are not shown in this photo as I think they replaced the old stand dressing rooms.

  4. I have a Race Card for the Stockton Statute Cherry Fair Friday July 18th 1862 with the runners and riders and the donkeys. These include Lord Mayor of Mandale and prizes were : winner £1, sedond a double reined bridle, third a single reined bridle. I also have a poster for the 558th Stockton Statute Cherry Fair of 1868 as granted by “Anthony Bec, Bishop of Durham on the feast of the translation of St Thomas the Martyr”. Events include Penny Rolls & Treacle, Hasty Puddings, a smoking match and a 100 yard race for wooden legged men ( first prize 1Lb of tobacco ). And of course – donkey races. There are more but I won`t bore you.
