The lower picture shows the furthest extension of the Malleable or South Durham Steelworks. The Malleable site was gradually extended eastwords until it formed a huge escarpment overlooking “Portrack Lake”. Portrack Lake was, of course, the remains of one of the loops in the River Tees which had been isolated when the river was straightened in the 1830s.
