Yes the small arch, which was the original road bridge, was filled in, although the access road still exists on both sides of the track! The bankwork referred to by Anon & Gareth was undertaken to strengthen and stabilise the trackbed. The bridge is still there, just filled and covered.
There was some suggestion a few years ago about building a small rail halt at this point, and many residents were up in arms when they thought that this was happening when the work started!
The site of the long demolished Ragworth pub is now an Aldi supermarket.
I live about half a mile left of shot and have driven both over and under this bridge many many times, but not seen this pic before, cheers Gordon.
The new bridge over the A1027 was installed on Sunday 13 June 1965. I was then a signalman at Haverton Hill South signal box and all passenger trains travelled over the single line from North Shore signal box to Haverton Hill South box, then to Haverton Hill station where they reversed to Billingham. (Engine attached to rear of train except D.M.U”s.).
I was up this way a few weeks ago, it appears that the arch to the right of the picture has been filled in, with no trace left of the bridge.
I remember the construction work well, at the time I was attending Fredy Natt school. The building in the middle background is the Ragworth pub which used to serve Beverleys beer. I think the name of one of the barmaids was Annie Littler who use to serve in the bar which was well used by residents of Blue Hall est.
I remember the new bridge span over the A1027 Ring Road being put into place one Sunday in – I think – around September 1965? Presently, 12/08 there is a lot of work going on at this site, which looks as though it involves strengthening the railway embankment on Stockton bank up towards Norton South.
