As mentioned the garage shop was Chapmans, Godwins was the Co-op grocers & the Complete Cycle shop was the Co-op butchers.
It was indeed Chapmans garage.
I can”t be 100% certain, but I think it was called Chapmans.
Can anyone remember what the garage used to be called on Norton Road which was situated round about where Goodwins(I think)is now? It must hve been between 1952-62 (not sure). Hope someone can help me.
Going away from the picture I bought two Ford cars from Oxbridge Garage years ago. A Ford Prefect and a Consul Both with bench seats both good cars in their day.I got the Prefect serviced once and they forgot to check the sump plug and the oil disapeared and cost them a new engine.
Talking of Garages in Stockton does anyone remember The Oxbridge Garage Company – the Ford Garage? I ordered a new Ford Prefect from them in 1946 price £425.00 with a two and a half year delivery time which expired and I never did get a new Ford Prefect despite many enquries. However I did get a second hand Ford Consul when I moved to Leeds. I am afraid in the end, the motor industry of this country got what it deserved. A great pity another industry thrown away. That was part of Chapmans Garage. It was the place you went for the odd spring, the car parts shops could not provide. I remember when you could fill up there and Mr Chapman did repairs in the back garage for very reasonable cost. In the days when we did all our own repairs and maintenance it was a godsend. I cannot remember when he did not have the part needed or could get it for you. It was a loss when he closed down.
The entrance to Chapman’s Garage workshop was in Bone Street.
Those petrol pumps look like the ones outside Chapman”s. They were taken out of use because of a new law which limited the distance pumps could be situated from the road and residential property.
