  1. Didn’t realise how many connections I had with Yarm Lane until I saw these pictures.
In 1967 I worked at the Direct Carpet Warehouse alongside the mayoress, Mrs Renee Creasey. In 1969 I took my driving lessons with BSM who got me through my test at second try. In 1974 I met my future husband – still together – in the Garrick; coincidentally, my parents had first met at the Maison de danse during the war years. We had lots of good nights out in the 70’s at the Garrick and Birds’ Nest, carrying on later to the 21’s club where we would dance to the latest music.
More recently we have wined and dined many times at Borges and celebrated our son’s 40th at the new Borges function room which used to be the old Green Bushes.

  2. well you are a blast from the past Barry – you are right about the buns they did and I believe they were called ‘gut busters’. That place is now flats, the Bowesfield pub is a nursing home, what was the day centre is for the homeless. Can you remember the public toilet on ‘bowsy’ lane

  3. I remember Burdons the music shop. They also had a record dept. This dept closed about 1963/4 and sold of all the record stock at half price, even newly issued chart stuff. One I remember buying was ‘Don’t ever change’ by the Crickets, plus much more rock n roll stuff.

  4. Tillstons used to be John Burdons from at least the 1960’s & possibly the 1970’s. They sold musical instruments and was a mecca for members of local groups, or aspiring young musicians, to congregate on Saturday afternoons in the 60’s to try out the latest guitar etc. I played my first Fender Stratocaster in there one Saturday!

  5. I used to love Borges in the mid 80’s – the garlic mushrooms were to die for. I used to come home on leave and treat the family. Tilstons used to be called something else, (John something?) and my mam worked there (June Harris). Some cracking bikes in the window though!!
