  1. The picture is most certainly Thorpe Thewles Station. The combination of station building, railway workers cottages and skew overbridge are all in exactly the right positions. It matched other verified photos that I have seen.

See my scale model on our website.

  2. THIS IS CERTAINLY THORPE THEWLES STATION. IT IS STILL THERE AND IS NOW A CAFE, TEA-ROOMS AND A LITTLE GIFT SHOP. LOOKS EXACTLY THE SAME TODAY INCLUDING THE PLATFORM. JUST MINUS THE TRACKS.

  3. Not completely certain, but with the station buildings and the cottages and bridge beyond it does look familiar. Notice the train the photo is taken from appears to be steam hauled? I remember a steam hauled, railway enthusiasts’ tour taking this route up to Wellfield and Sunderland in May,1964. I wonder if this might be it? By the 1960s the route was used very little, perhaps a couple of coal trains a day southbound and very occasionally for Sunday engineering diversions off the normal Newcastle-Middlesbrough line. The section in the photo closed completely in 1966.

  4. I found this among my photos and I think it is of Thorpe Thewles station on the Castle Eden branch. Maybe someone can confirm this for me, I would be interested to know.
