  1. Frank Turton often mentioned on here has died, seen in the Gazette today 2nd Feb 2017. He attended the RH senior school and played football for the school and Town tam. This is a copy of the death in the Gazette.

    • Lenny went right through school years with me, first at the Frederick Nattrass and then the Richard Hind. Me being a couple of years older than Lennie, I left RH to secure an apprenticeship at Head Wrightsons, Thornaby. He later arrived at HW’s at became an apprentice welder and becoming a Lloyds approved welder which made him one of the top welders in the firm. He followed in his fathers footsteps by becoming a HW’s employee, hid dad being a moulder at the Eaglescliffe foundry. He also had brothers at HW’s with Eric working with his dad and Dickie at the Forge as a Fitter and Turner. Lennie was always a pleasant lad and most of all a good footballer and athlete, representing the school and town whilst at RH. I must say good luck Lennie in the progress of your health. It’s marvellous what can be acheived healthwise these days.

  2. For all Richard Hind doing the double this season 1953-54, it was two boys from other schools that played for Durham County, Alan Iceton of Bowesfield Lane who later played for Middlesbrough Juniors & Spennymoor Utd. & Harry Chapman of Mill lane.

  3. This is one of Richard Hind teams that done the double, the Salmon Cup and
the League Championship in season 1953-54.

  4. There was an enthusiasm for sport at Richard Hind that was encouraged by the Head, John Rosser. It was not difficult to select teams to play in the Under 13 and Under 15 leagues. For the 2 age groups there were the cup competitions, Salmon & Salter Cup. It was possible to enter more than one team in these competitions. So it was that one season 3 teams were entered for the Salmon Cup and all 3 went through to the second round. That meant that half of the year group were playing!

  5. One of the highlights of my years at RH was to be chosen, by Ken Sawyer, to play for the school in one of the many football teams he coached. Along with the practice games at Ropner playing fields I am very grateful to Ken for the memories of those wonderful years. He deserves much praise for the very good football teams he put together.

  6. Bob Irwin commented last year’Ken it must be really good and pleasing for you to be reading of the boys you taught at RH 60 years ago.’
Certainly so. I enjoyed those years in the classroom and in the sporting activities. Walking from school to Ropner Park for Games as I think it appeared on the time table. Later at the Ropner fields at Fairfield having negotiated the field previously used by Stockton Sec.
Visiting these forums is fascinating. When I found this photo and others amongst my files I sent them for picturestockton realising they would bring pleasure to many.
They were a good lot in this team although that applies to other team photos on this forum.

  7. Yes it is the same Frank Turton now retired formerly of my own Building and Civil Engineering Co. now living at Neasham. Does Dick Gatenby remember our Xmas Boxing Match. Great To See Photo and comments.

  8. Yes that is the same Frank Turton, will be 71ish now. I believe he started his own business up in Eaglescliffe manufacturing roof trusses.

  9. Frank Turton in this photo lived next door to us in Balder. He had an older brother called Eric. He was married to Hazel.

  10. My cousin, Barry Brannan, also served his time at Head Wrightson, working for Harry Johns in the bridgeyard pressure vessel shop. I believe he later worked in the Gas Board offce.

  11. Graham,
Please wish Arthur well on his 70th. All this team should reach that age within the school year period 2009-2010!!
Their teacher survives some 12+ years older than them.

  12. Arthur Ellis is very well and now lives in Hurworth-on-Tees – will be 70 this year. He was happy to hear about this photo and I’ll pass on any comments.

  13. Still see Alfie Agar regularly in Norton. He lives in Norton Ave. Member of the Malleable Club. Should have recognised him on the photo but I could not visualize the change in his looks.

  14. This brings back memories – how many of these lads are still around? Besides winning the two cups – a fair few of this team were awarded their Town Colours – being selected to play for the Stockton Boys Team.
I remember playing for the Town team on the Victoria Ground – Oxbridge – but can’t remember the opponents.
Ken Moody lived round the corner from me,
Rod Kennedy was a designer at Wests Engineering, and Frank Turton had a well known roofing business in Eaglescliffe.
Ken Sawyer – who submitted the photo – was a teacher at Richard Hind.

    • Syd Law lived across the road from me and Ken Moody around the corner.Rod lived in Cranbourne Terrace and we hung around together for a while. He married Angie Bird whose parents owned the shop opposite St Cuthberts School.

  15. The line up is:
Back row – Charlie Harrison, Roger Kennedy, Arthur Ellis, Barry Brannan, Frank Turton, Sid Law, Dick Gatenby.
Front. Alf Agar, Les Peacoock, Ken Moody, Lenny Barnes, Norman Cowley.

  16. Back Row; Far left is Charlie Harrison, next to him is Rod Kennedy and far right is Dick Gatenby. Front Row; 2nd from right and next to Ken Moody is Len Barnes.

  17. I think the blondie lad on the front row is Len Barnes and 5th from left on the back row looks like Alan Dodsworth.

  18. I’ll need some help naming these players. The only ones I remember are front centre, Goalkeeper Geoff ? Moody, and front 2nd right Phil ? Barnes.
