Totally agree that Chandlers Wharf was a huge white elephant, there is only the bingo now and burger king that gives anyone cause to go there, wonder how many years it will be before something new is there?
It was said that when Safeways were going onto the Chandlers Wharf, Tescos in the town disappeared. Tescos thought that they were too near to each other and could not stand the competition.
Chandler’s Wharf: always appeared something of a ‘white elephant’. In the wrong place? It seemed ok in the early days, with a Safeway supermarket and Texas Homecare DIY, but was probably too far out of town for walkers and could not really compete with Teesside Park or Portrack for car shoppers. The bingo hall seems to keep it going -just- , but Charley Brown’s car repairs, next to Burger King now appears derelict.
